Jon B. DeVries
Director
Marshall Bennett Institute
Prior to his current position, DeVries was the founding
director of the Chicago School of Real Estate at Roosevelt
University. The Institute provides financial support
for the School, sponsors industry events such as the
annual Fogelson Forums, undertakes research, and assists
students find opportunities in the industry.
DeVries also is the national director of URS Corporation’s
Strategic Development Planning practice. This practice
provides comprehensive pre-development analysis and
planning services, including market, financial and
development strategies, for public and private clients.
He has led planning for major projects such as the
St. Louis North Riverfront, Buffalo Outer Harbor,
Northeast El Paso/Ft. Bliss, Boeing World Headquarters,
Ford Motor Auto Supplier Park, Joliet Arsenal, Biltmore
Farms, Chicago Central Area Plan, City of Chicago
Industrial Strategy and state economic efforts for
Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan. He has also directed
international projects in the Caribbean, Guatemala,
and Mexico.
He was formerly principal, Real Estate and Hospitality
Group at Arthur Anderson LLP and senior vice president
and director of research at Goodkin Research Corporation
in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. And also has worked for Bell & Gardner,
Inc., Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Anderson,
Benton and Holmes, Inc.
DeVries founded the nation’s first 501(c) 3
neighborhood housing corporation in Winston-Salem
in 1974. For his efforts, he was nominated to the
National Commission on Neighborhoods and received
the N.C. American Planning Association “Citizen
Planner of the Year Award” in 1977.
DeVries’ academic credentials include a master’s
degree in Urban Planning and Policy, University of
Illinois at Chicago; a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, Columbia
University; a Masters, Union Theological, New York
and bachelor of arts, History and Political Science,
St. Olaf College He is involved in numerous professional
associations.
