Adrian D. Smith is a design partner in the Chicago office
of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. Throughout his
career at SOM, Smith has played an active role in international
projects and developments. From 1971-1973 he was the
resident project architect for the Corporate Headquarters
for the Wills Hartcliffe Project in Bristol, England.
In 1989, he was selected to be one of 16 architects of
international status to participate in the IV Hamburger
Bauforum to lead a team in exploring alternative visions
for the Speicherstadt District in Hamburg, Germany. He
also participated in a team of international architects
and planners in the Zentrum: Berlin Symposium, at the
Bauhaus in Dessau, to discuss the challenges of city
planning for the reunification of Berlin. In addition
to these projects and activities, Mr. Smith has also
designed buildings in China, England, Germany, Indonesia,
Kuwait, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. He has also served
on numerous professional juries and committees, most
notably the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute
of Architects Fellows Committee. Smith also is a frequent
speaker at national and international conferences and
symposiums and has appeared in several documentaries.
He is active in many charitable and industry organizations
and has won numerous awards.
